Dan Riley didn’t find music until his sophomore year of high school when he picked up his first upright bass, starting his meandering musical journey through every genre. A longtime sideman, Dan played bass for the likes of Slick Rick, Shaquille O’Neal, and many other artists who are also fantastic at basketball. On his newly released self-titled debut EP Dan Riley, Dan shows off his ability as a lyricist, composer, and performer fronting his own band. Mr. Riley sings with honest vocals over lush chordal harmony on top of some tight grooves building layers of warm gooey organic musical tastiness for your ear-holes. The music has been compared to Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, Wilco, Van Morrison, and of course, Celine Dion.
Here’s a bit about the killer band… Tickling the ivories and all kinds of keys, Tay Strathairn (Ed Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros, Dawes) plus the always tasty and timely guitarist Ben Cassorla (Belle Brigade, Cassorla) and keeping the groove tipping just right Matt Bogdanow (The Polar Quest, Plushgun). To add another level of awesome, Trevor Sohnen, soared beautifully above the band with his pedal steel on three tracks (Dog, Big Eyes, My Dream). The orchestral talents of Maiani da Silva, violin I, Felix Hernandez-Jones, violin II, Sharon A. Ray, viola, Isaiah Gage, cello brought lush strings to two tracks (My Dream, Quiet Thoughts). And finally to elevate the music with a level of richness that hits you right in the gut, the additional vocal talents of, Myra Flynn, Aaron Older, and Nate Johnson… and Dan is on the bass and lead vocals, of course.
Six tracks were recorded in the foothills of the Angeles National Forest at the studio of Older Records. All production and engineering with Aaron Older at the helm – who’s tracked hit albums for Dawes, Ed Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros, Sugarcult and more. Then Brian Bender (KT Tunstall, Bing and Ruth, Jose James) of the Motherbrain mixed the EP with a blend of high-tech modern plug-ins and old school electronics to serve the warmth and organic quality the music demanded. Finally the music was finished in the desert of Arizona at Nathan James Vault mastering.
